#223 Du Jour- Amy Hempel
Quitting smoking is hard, nicotine is more addictive than
heroin and readily available. So, quitting has become akin to something of a
national pastime.
“One day into the program, I realize the only thing that
made me smart was nicotine. Now I can’t plan a trip from the bed to the
bathroom. I don’t find the front door 50 percent of the time. In my head
there’s a broken balcony I fall off of when I speak."
As if quitting wasn’t hard enough, you also have to endure
the sickly sweet support of your friends giving you Hallmark wisdom with fake
smiles and condescending looks:
“Each day comes bearing its gifts. Untie the ribbons.” Ugh!
