#293 Castle 4- Edith Pearlman
Zeph is a specialist in regional anesthesia, he lives in
“The Castle”, the local name of the medical center, and is “Married” to his
work.”
“…his father had not been a surgeon, not any kind of doctor,
just a feckless hippie who named his one child Zephyr and willed him a walking
stick and did talk jabberwocky.”
“…he always entered the room as if he were metal and had
neglected to oil himself.”
This is a kind of sleepy story. It’s in third person, but
follows Zeph mostly through his pretty lonely, uneventful life helping people
not feel pain. He finds brief love and then moves on, holding on to the one
thing given to him by his father. It’s all written fairly delicately.
